Textile fragment, 8th century, Japan. Only fragments presently exist for Japanese textiles of this great age. There were a number of textile styles in Japan during the 8th century - this example is one of the more interesting ones. Most of the world cultures prior to when this fabric was created were by and large producing fabrics with animal, human and nature iconography - relatively representational - so a design as abstract as this one stands out.
